Server requirements

OFEngine runs on an ordinary Linux server or VPS. cPanel hosting works, but it isn’t required.

ComponentRequirement
Operating systemLinux (Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, AlmaLinux 8+, or similar)
PHP8.1 or newer (8.2 recommended)
DatabaseMySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+, with the utf8mb4 character set
Web serverApache 2.4 with mod_rewrite, or Nginx with equivalent rewrite rules
HTTPSRequired. Payment webhooks and livestreaming only work over HTTPS. Let’s Encrypt is fine.
CronAccess to a cron job that runs every minute

For a new site we suggest at least 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of RAM. Video processing is the heaviest workload, so add more as your creators upload more video.

The installer checks these for you. Most hosts enable them by default.

bcmath, ctype, curl, dom, fileinfo, gd, intl, mbstring, mysqlnd, openssl, pcre, tokenizer, xml, zip

OFEngine uses FFmpeg to transcode videos, create preview clips and add overlays. That needs FFmpeg installed on the server and at least one of the PHP functions exec, shell_exec or proc_open allowed.

Some shared and cPanel hosts disable those functions. OFEngine still installs and runs without them; only video transcoding, preview clips and overlays are skipped. The installer’s system check warns you if they’re unavailable.

You only need the services you plan to use. Each one is configured later in the admin panel.

  • A payment processor: Stripe, PayPal, CCBill, NetBilling or a crypto processor. See Payment gateways.
  • Media storage: local disk works to start; an S3-compatible service (Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, DigitalOcean Spaces, Wasabi) is recommended once you grow. See Media storage.
  • An email provider for receipts and password resets, such as Amazon SES, Postmark, SendGrid or Mailgun. See Email.
  • GetStream for livestreaming and 1:1 video calls. See Livestreaming and video calls.
